On November 6th, 2013, "socialist" Bill de Blasio was elected Mayor of New York City. His program includes the financing of minimum wages and kindergartens by raising taxes for the richest citizens. Radical ideas which since some time encounter a fertile ground in the U.S. In a recent survey, when asked about the choice between capitalism and socialism, half of U.S. youngsters under 30 answered "socialism". Recession and unemployment are fueling the strong criticism against unrestrained capitalism. Social unrest gives strength to movements such as "Occupy Wall Street" and visibility to unknown parties such as the Socialist Party or the Communist Party U.S.A. The core of this critical thought lies in New York City: social analysis magazines are founded in Brooklyn, conferences on Marxism are held at the Brecht Forum and in the Chelsea galleries art gives its own reading of the protest. "I’ve given more talks on Marxism since 2011 than in the last 40 years", economist Richard Wolff explains: "Obama was accused of being a socialist, but the thought of many people is: if Obama is a socialist, then I am too".
